Forestry, Shelter and Erosion Control

Here are our top recommended trees for Stock Shelter, Wind Breaks, Forestry and Erosion Control. These trees are selected for their hardiness and ability to grow in harsh conditions. Feel free to contact us for expert planting advice and to make sure you are planting the right trees for your situation. Although Poplars and Willows are very quick growing and good for stabilising banks they do tend to blow over or snap in moderate to high winds. Elms, Oaks, Plane Trees, Swamp Cypress, Birch, Maples, Larch, Redwood, Cedar, Thuja and Cypress are much more wind hardy trees. Alders are also a great option for Bank stabilisation or for planting in poor soils as they will grow in very poor soils and they encourage grass growth underneath them as they give off nitrogen, meaning once the Alder Trees are established the site can still be grazed. Alders are also very quick growing trees and Alnus glutinosa is ideal for planting along waterways or lowlands as they will grow in swampy land and have a very good root system. Swamp Cypress – Taxodiums are also great for bank stablisation and planting along waterways. Native Flax, Ground Covers and Grasses are great for erosion control, As Flax and Grasses are shallow rooted we recommend mixing in Trees with deep root systems like Pohutukawa’s, Totaras, Cabbage Trees or any of the deciduous trees like Oaks, Elms, Alders, Maples, Ash, Cedar, Cypress, Plane Trees etc. If you are still unsure on what to plant for your situation, please contact us on 068700563 or 0800GREENLEAF
