A large, evergreen shrub with leathery, dark green foliage and red, immature stems. Produces racemes of small white flowers in spring and into summer which then followed by small berries that start off green gradually turning red before become black and are a source of food for birds. P. lusitanics are typically grown to create hedges and screens and they are also good for doing topiary work and as standards. May be grown in full sun or partial shade where soils are moderately fertile, moist and free-draining. Suitable for growing in coastal locations.
