M. communis is a bushy, medium-sized evergreen shrub with small, aromatic, ovate leaves and produces fragrant white flowers in spring through into summer, which are then followed by purplish-black berries. Plant in full sun or light shade where soils are fertile, moist and free-draining. Tolerates drought and is suitable for growing in coastal locations. Grows to about 3.5m but may be trimmed if required.
